Helping Celebrate International Jazz Day – The Simon Spillett Quartet Play Tubby Hayes: Tonight’s special concert is a timely homage to the ultimate British jazz legend, saxophonist Tubby Hayes, a musician with strong ties to the Bull’s Head having played at the iconic venue many times during the 60’s and early 70’s. Tubby was much more than a local hero though; working and recording in New York and Los Angeles in the 60’s and travelling extensively across Europe during his all too short career, he was a truly International jazzman, one who set the pattern for generations to come.
In celebration of Tubby’s music, award winning tenor saxophonist Simon Spillett has assembled an all-star ensemble comprising of some of the finest musicians on the contemporary UK jazz scene including leading young British pianist Alex Bryson, noted bassist Simon Thorpe and top drummer, Pete Cater. Together they will be featuring Hayes’ own compositions and arrangements from iconic albums such as ‘Mexican Green’ and ‘Tubbs in NY’ along with other standards and ballads from the great man’s songbook.
