Neil McFarlane presents:
The Horns Comedy Club
Entry Requirements: Under 18s to be accompanied by an appropriate adult
Greetings and a broadly happy new year to all our regulars - and our profoundly irregulars.
Change has occurred - we’re moving to the third Thursday of the month in case you hadn’t noticed. And for our slightly-delayed first offering of 2022, we present a perfect PEACH of a performance.
Regular MC Neil McFarlane will be back in flagrant contempt of received wisdom and will talk a short pile of nonsense till you’re all facing the right way and simmering with impatient rage. At which point the fun starts, because we’ve got two brilliant acts to kick of this new era of hope and erotic joy - the sublimely and demurely funny CRESSIDA WETTON, in support of ONLY the current flippin’ British Comedian of the Year, the incomparable JEFF INNOCENT.
CRESSIDA WETTON
Cressida has appeared on BBC Radio 4 Extra and numerous shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, including ‘Small Town Fools’, a show about provincial life in Gloucestershire - one of her favourite topics. She admits to being from the West Country, but escaped in 2014 and is now able to joke about meat raffles, recreational drugs and other rural pursuits, from a safe distance.
Cressida has a unique slant on small-town mentality and her winning observations on family life and the, ahem “characters” she met in her previous office job are guaranteed to seduce any audience, no matter where they’re from
Also, she lives on a boat, which is just inexpressibly cool.
What the fans say:
“Really good writing and a natural stage presence.”
“Cressida Wetton is original, charming and very funny.”
“Captivating presence and a great response.” (The STAND Comedy Club)
Funny Women New Act Competition – 2018 Regional Finalist
BBC New Comedy Award – 2017 Heat runner up
So You Think You’re Funny – 2015 Semi finalist
Laughing Horse New Act of the Year – 2014 Semi-finalist
JEFF INNOCENT
Multi-award winning stand-up comedian and the current British Comedian of the Year Jeff Innocent has reached legendary status among his peers and audiences alike by staying at the top of his game for over 20 years. His unique appeal lies in the contrast between his east end 'geezer’ appearance and demeanour, and his educated, philosophical delivery and culturally relevant subject matter.
Jeff started his comedy career in the mid 90’s at the age of 41 after a colourful and eventful life. He was born in the mid 1950’s and grew up in London’s east end. His family included a father and brothers best described as ‘entrepreneurs’. Jeff’s artistic tendencies took him in a different career direction however and over the years he has worked variously as a window dresser in the trendy 70s world of the Kings Road and Carnaby Street. A Jamaican music DJ, an interest he maintains. And in 1989 he went to university as a mature student to study Cultural History for a BA then MA.
As a teenager he was part of several drama groups that included the Newham Youth Theatre and the East End Soapbox Theatre. Appearing regularly at the radical Half Moon Theatre in London's Aldgate. It was in 1996, after a gap of 25 years, that Jeff resumed his passion for performing by enrolling in a stand up comedy course (a 40th birthday gift) tutored by alternative comedy pioneer Tony Allen. Since then Jeff has performed stand up comedy not just in the UK but in such far flung and unlikely locations as Viet Nam, Abu Dhabi, China, the Philippines, India, Norway, South Africa and Kuala Lumpur to name just a few.
His TV and radio credits include ‘Little Howard’s Big Question’ (BBC), ‘The Comedy Store Presents…’ (Comedy Central), ‘Take the Mic’ (Channel Four), ‘Edinburgh Nights’ (BBC), ‘28 Acts in 28 Minutes’ (Radio 4) and, bafflingly, ‘Call the Midwife’.
What the critics say:
“A superior stand up. He commands the room, hits strong gags with style and confidence and has the audience bending to his every whim.”
CHORTLE.co.uk
“It should be made law that every British citizen should go and see Jeff innocent, he’s that funny.”
Evening Standard
“Terrific thought-provoking comedy with a big warm heart.”
Kate Copstick
“Clever, honest, funny. Not only hugely likeable comedy but fabulously subversive.”
The Scotsman
“With the body of a nightclub bouncer and the brain of a university boffin, Jeff presents a show that’s part history lesson, part sociology lecture, but all funny.”
The Guardian
And my favourite quote… “Jeff Innocent is like Alan Bennet writing an episode of Minder.”
SO… I think we can agree, this is not a show you want to let get past you, dears.
