Bassist Dave Jones leads his Nonet featuring some of the UK’s best jazz musicians including Henry Lowther, Mark Armstrong, trumpets, Nick Mills, trombone, Tony Woods, Pete Hurt and Chris Biscoe, saxophones, John Turville, piano, Eric Ford, drums with Madeleine Jones on vocals. The evening explores Dave Jones’ arrangements of standards, classic jazz repertoire and his original compositions evoking the energy and atmosphere of big band swing alongside Latin jazz and contemporary European jazz textures. Expect a dynamic evening with gentle and evocative moments through to blistering highs with improvising of the highest level. “Dave’s writing is sophisticated and nuanced. Playing and exploring the Nonet arrangements of great American writers such as Bob Hammer, Marty Paich and Frank Griffith provided the inspiration for the band and for this special performance Dave is joined by two of the finest jazz trumpet players in the UK in Mark Armstrong who is the Musical Director of The National Youth Jazz Orchestra and legendary trumpeter Henry Lowther. The trombone of Nick Mills completes the brass section. The saxophones are band leaders in their own right with Tony Woods on lead alto with Pete Hurt and Chris Biscoe and the rhythm section is completed by John Turville on piano and Eric Ford, two of the finest and most versatile musicians on the scene. The voice of emerging vocalist Madeleine Jones is featured on a number of the arrangements both as soloist and as a wonderful textured blended within the ensemble. 8.30pm tickets £5 student £11 in advance and £13 on the door.
