Iconoclassics with Matthew Sharp and Viv McLean

Acclaimed concert pianist Viv McLean, "Extraordinary originality, superb simplicity, and fingers of steel hidden behind muscles of velvet…." Le Monde, Paris, returns to The Jazz Room with cellist and baritone Matthew Sharp, "an extraordinary cellist – charismatic, virtuosic, brimming with verve and poetry….." The Times, for a concert exploring the musical world of Robert and Clara Schumann and the composer Johannes Brahms, who was a close friend. Schumann's great song cycle Dichterliebe, (‘A Poet’s Love’), was written when he was separated from his beloved Clara,and celebrates their happiness and togetherness. Clara Schumann's Romances were written for her and the violinist Joseph Joachim to perform together, and are lovely, private pieces, tinged with poignancy. Meanwhile, passion defiance and pathos rule in Brahms' second Cello Sonata. The programme will include, Robert Schumann – Dichterliebe, Clara Schumann - Three Romances Op. 22 and Johannes Brahms - Sonata for Cello, No. 2 in F Op. 99.
