The EFG London Jazz Festival 2017 Presents
Entry Requirements: Under 18s to be accompanied by an appropriate adult
Art formed this new band to showcase some of jazz’s lesser known gems from composers such as Thelonius Monk, bringing a fresh musicality to material that you wouldn’t normally hear. Along with Art, the stellar line-up, features pianist Gareth Williams, trumpeter Steve Fishwick, bassist Arnie Somogyi & drummer Winston Clifford. “A collective that might stand comparison with any in the wider world of jazz …..” says Peter Vacher of The Guardian. New Directions reflects a desire for a fresh, though accessible examination of this music and the additional firepower of compositions by Messrs Williams, Somogyi and Fishwick add further variety to the repertoire.
“One of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians …..” Dave Gelly – The Observer. A huge figure on the British jazz scene since the early 60’s, Art Themen has continued to work at the highest level both in the UK and on the International stage. A previous winner of the tenor saxophone category in the British Jazz Awards, this living legend of a tenor player is still regularly playing to packed crowds over at The Bull’s Head. “His ideas (are) eclectic in an unpredictable style that has outlasted the Coltrane clones of his generation ……” said Jack Massarick – London Evening Standard Jazz Critic. Completing the quartet are John Critchinson on piano, Tim Wells on double bass & Spike Wells on drums.
